Wandering around Madrid

We had planned to go on a Food Tour yesterday, but due to a series of unfortunate events as Daniel Handler would say, we missed the tour. But, as long as Gail and I are together, every day is exciting. We decided to have a Spanish breakfast in a barbequed meat place. On our way there, were some incredible murals. I love this picture of Gail’s that makes me look part of the mural. Gail’s note: It looks like Dan is photoshopped in, but I assure you, he is not!

The place we chose for breakfast served a great ham and cheese croissant, but it was hardly Spanish fare. We wandered to the Plaza Mayor, but it was under construction, so we didn’t stay there long. Google was little help. It didn’t really know where we were. The blue dot that marked our current location continually moved over the screen, despite the fact that we were sitting down. We decided just to wander around, just to see what we could find. We saw several amazing buildings, including this one with 3 metal sculptures out front.

Gail tried to ask this guy, but he was little help.

We stopped for lunch at a great cafe playing Spanish music, but alas, the food they offered was Italian. Over 24 hours in Spain, and still no Spanish food. But lots of great churches like Basilica de San Miguel.

And Capilla de Nuestra Señora y de San Juan de Letrán

We got a real taste of Spanish life, including a high school kid being embarrassed by his mother who wanted him to wear a sash proclaiming it was his birthday.

Finally, for dinner, we searched for a Spanish restaurant. Google told us there were a few Spanish restaurants within a block of us. One was not open (yet, it was only 19:30). Another hadn’t been there for several years. We retraced our steps to the plaza where the mother had embarrassed her kid. Kids were playing soccer everywhere. Only one group tried to take us out with a soccer ball. We eventually found a restaurant, La Musa Latina. They served incedible tapas! Our first Spanish food in Spain!!!
