Garmisch-Partenkirchen

We left Regensburg on Wednesday, June 18, and made our way south by train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Munich. On the first leg of our journey, we sat in a small compartment with a very nice German woman, who lived in Regensburg, and was taking the train to Munich to meet with her doctor about problems she was having with her hip replacement surgery. Since Gail is considering hip replacement when we get back, she and the woman had a lot to talk about.

We talked most of the way from Regensburg to Munich. She was a retired teacher who specialized in English. Normally, her husband drove her to these appointments, but he had work obligations today. She told us the trains were always late. It was certainly the case that day. We missed our connection to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and had to take the next train. One curiosity: no one ever checked our ticket, on either of the trains we took.

We arrived in Garmisch-Partenkirchen about an hour late. We checked into Moun10. A very nice young woman named Sabina checked us into our place. She told us that we needed to explore the largest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze. Our apartment was wonderful with incredible views.

We thought at first this was a church at the top of the peak. Turns out that when hikers first summit a peak, they put a marker to indicate that fact.

Gail captures another sunset moment.

We awoke on Thursday, June 19th to another gorgeous view of the mountains

We have been moving pretty fast this past month. We need a place to relax. Garmisch-Partenkirchen provides that respite.

Thursday, June 19, is Corpus Christi, a holiday in Bavaria. A few restaurants are open, but most everything else is closed. We wandered around downtown Garmisch. (Garmisch-Partenkirchen is actually 2 towns: the more modern Garmisch, the more historic Partenkirchen.)

We are looking for the Tourist Information Center. We find it, but it closed early for the holiday. There is a fountain in the square in front of it.

The buildings in downtown Garmisch are pretty spectacular

Back at our Airbnb, we experience another spectacular sunset.

Tomorrow, on the first day of summer, we’re off to the “Top of Germany”, the Zugspitze.
