Haga & Skansen Kronan

Since it was still going to be hot (according to us) on Sunday, July 20, we decided to start our explorations at 9 AM. Our main goal for the day was to visit Skansen Kronan, a structure that defended Gothenberg from the late 17th century, and a great place to get a good view of the city. It’s located near the Haga district with its beautiful “governor houses”.

We took our faithful bus 18, and then had to transfer. Gothenburg has so many options that Google was mighty confused, offering us too many choices of where to transfer. Fortunately, we transferred near this lovely fountain called Såningskvinnan, thought to be the first female sculpture in the city.

The Våghuset, a building that resembles waves, captured our attention.

Another interesting fountain is the Järntorgetsbrunnen, a fountain with 5 naked women, each one representing one of the 5 continents.

The fountain is part of a square called Järntorget.

We found our way to Haga, and wandered up its streets towards Skansen Kronan

We saw some amazing apartments in the Haga district.

This was on several buildings. We’re not exactly sure what it means.

We get our first view of Skansen Kronan.

We wound our way up the hill, and got a good view of the city. Commanding one view was the Karlatornet, one of the tallest buildings in Sweden, just completed in Fall of last year (2024).

A lot of church steeples.

Here we are

…with its crown. The name Kronan means crown in Swedish.

Feskekörka or the Fish Church

What do you mean, it’s locked?

The cannons defend Skansen Kronan.

That church (Oscar Fredrik Church) looks interesting

Let’s get a closer look.

Finally, we find a way up for a clear view of this fascinating church

We meet a delightful young woman from Slovenia who took our picture. We talked with her for about 10 or 15 minutes. She was completing a masters degree in management in Croatia.

No wonder these guys have a headache!!!

We returned to our Airbnb. Some interesting artifacts in it.

The Gothia Cup is over. A team from Nigeria won. Our hosts’ son’s team lost 4 – 3 in their quarterfinal match. Our hosts and their sons have gone to Sicily on holiday.

Tomorrow, we’re going on an Archipelago Tour.
