The Golden Circle

We took a day trip to the Golden Circle on Friday, June 27. The Golden Circle is a loop containing

  • Þingvellir National Park
  • Caves
  • Geysers
  • Waterfalls
  • Tomato Farm

First our guide drove to the National Park:

Þingvallavatn is a rift valley lake in southwestern Iceland. With a surface of 84 square km, it is the largest natural lake in Iceland.

This entire area exists between the American teutonic plate and the European one. There may be a spot where you can step between the plates. If there is, our guide didn’t think so. He did say you can swim between them.

Heading towards the caves

The caves were places where early settlers lived

At the geysers. See the blue bubble?

It’s gonna blow!

Off to the waterfalls. Gullfoss means Golden Falls

See the waterfalls

On to Friðheimar, the tomato farm

Friðheimar produces approximately 370 tons of tomatoes annually. This equates to about two tons per day. The farm also provides about 18% of Iceland’s total tomato consumption.

Their specialty is tomato soup, and tomato beer. You need a reservation to get food. Unless you’re a tour company these are hard to get.

We left the tomato farm and found another waterfall, this one hidden from most tourists

Finally, we went to the Secret Lagoon, not really a secret, but one of the first thermal baths. It was very relaxing. No pictures here, just one on our way back to Reykjavík.

Tomorrow is a day off from tours. We expect to gently explore the area.

One piece of great news: Ken has recovered well, and he and Cathy will be joining us on the first day of July!!!!!!!😁😄😁
