To Vik …

On Sunday, July 6, Gail and I rented a car and headed southeast. We passed some marvelous countryside. We got few photos because…

  • The most dramatic scenery was on the driver’s side, and it’s really hard to drive and take pictures
  • There were no notices of pull outs; by the time we noticed them, we were past them
  • The pull outs we did see often involved a parking lot with a fee (fee lots are monitored by camera so no escaping the fee)

We stopped in Selfoss to get a few photos

Of the water

And a cute church

A little beyond Hella, where we stopped for a nice lunch of fish and chips, we saw

We next found Kvernufoss

We caught glimpses of the Myrdalsjokull Glacier

Then more than a glimpse:

Finally, we made it to Vík í Mýrdal, often shortened to Vík, the “biggest small village” in Iceland. We stopped for groceries, since there are no grocery stores or restaurants closer to our destination, 45 kilometers away. We saw this cool looking church.

And these horses

… and Beyond

So we left the village behind. We drove a little over a half hour through lava fields. We found a gravel road and drove up it to Hrifunes Nature Park. Our host took us to our next Airbnb, Háskersbakkar.

We are surrounded by natural beauty.

All these photos were taken from our Airbnb, from either our back deck or our front porch.

Ideally, this should end with a sunset photo (at 11:30 PM), but I’m going to cheat and use a sunrise picture from July 7 at 2 AM.
