Two Castles and a Fortress

On Saturday, July 26, we decided to visit by land some of the sights we had seen by sea on Friday. This is a view of “our” garden. Ours in that this is our view from our kitchen window, but not ours in that a fence separates this property from our Airbnb.

Here are a couple of photos from our neighborhood.

A door reaching out to greet us.

Nice kitty

Here are a few more photos of our park, the closest one to us.

Lauritz Nicolai Hvidt (LN White) was a Danish minister in the early 19th century

Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (Danish-Icelandic sculptor in late 18th / early 19th century) and his muse

We took the metro from City Hall Square.

The Lur Blowers (Lurblæser) . A lur is a bronze age instrument played in pairs.

This was our first ride on the Copenhagen metro. There are no drivers. So we sat in the front of the first car to see the tunnel and tracks ahead. Eventually, we came to our stop, which was a short walk to Marmokirken, Frederiks church

The inside of the church was majestic, but not overwhelming or gaudy.

A lovely cross adorned the altar

It had two organs, a new bigger one (not shown) and a smaller one that fit into the style of the church.

Symbol for St Mark, the evangelist (Gail just likes the lion).

Beautiful

Amalienborg palace, the main residence of the Danish Royal family. The complex consists of four almost identical palaces surrounding an octagonal palace square.

Fredrick the 5th in the center of the palace octagon.

A palace guard. Unlike their British counterparts, who are known for standing immobile, these look around, march around, like they were actually looking for threats.

I Am Queen Mary

Sign announcing “I Am Queen Mary”. You can’t see it very well unless you enlarge the image. Gail liked it because of all the fossils and rocks around the sign.

Caroline Amalie of Augustenburg was Queen of Denmark between 1839 and 1848. This statue is in the rose garden of the King’s garden.

Rosenborg Castle was used only twice, once after Christiansborg Palace burned down in 1794, and the second time during the British attack on Copenhagen in 1801.

One of the problems of Google Maps is that you can get so focused on getting from point A to point B that you lose sight of the big picture. We spent a long time roaming around. In the end, we were only one bus stop away from our Airbnb.

Tomorrow we plan on a short journey to Nyhavn and the botanical garden.
